South Africa’s online gambling industry is playing its part in job creation

Reports from the National Gambling Board of South Africa note that the gambling industry continues to contribute to employment both directly and indirectly through related services such as fintech, marketing, and tech infrastructure. While specific national figures for online gambling jobs are not yet published, industry insiders estimate that several thousand South Africans are now employed across licensed betting, development, and customer experience roles.

Gender diversity is also improving. Regional gaming publications like iGaming Business Africa and iGaming Afrika highlight a noticeable increase in women entering operational, marketing, and customer service positions across African gaming firms – a shift that’s changing the face of the sector for good. 

The transformation doesn’t stop there. Many of the new hires come from communities that were historically left out of traditional industries. Black South Africans are increasingly stepping into roles in IT, customer experience, and digital marketing. And as the industry matures, more of them are climbing into management and leadership positions.

Then there are the skills. This isn’t about one-size-fits-all work. The online gambling sector is a playground for data analysts, UX designers, content creators, cybersecurity specialists, and fintech wizards. Of course, unemployment is still the boss level South Africa hasn’t beaten yet. Stats SA reports an unemployment rate of 33.2 percent for Q2 2025, with youth unemployment still painfully high. So when one industry steps up and says, “We’ve got room for you,” it matters. Every developer, marketer, and support agent added to the payroll is one more person turning “maybe one day” into “I did it.”
